Life Legacy


Ralph L. Umbaugh, age 78, of 25747 CR 52, Nappanee, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 in an automobile accident on CR 52, east of Nappanee. He was born on June 3, 1933 in Nappanee on the homeplace to Harold L. and Virgie Gall Umbaugh. He lived his lifetime in the Nappanee area. He was a 1951 graduate of Nappanee High School and the Indianapolis Barber School. He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Umbaugh owned Lantz’s Barber Shop in Wakarusa in the 1960’s and 70”s. He was also a Metal Lath worker in the Carpenter’s Local Union. He enjoyed horses and all sports. He was a member of the Northern Indiana Horse Puller’s Association, the Michigan Boat and Machine Association and the Ohio Buckeye Horse Pulling Association.


Mr. Umbaugh is survived by a daughter – Cheryl (David) Riggle, Phoenix, AZ, sons, Bruce A. Umbaugh, Phoenix, AZ, and Paul A. Umbaugh, Nappanee, 3 grandchildren, Aric (Jennifer) Woodward, Buckeye, AZ, Samantha Riggle and Emma Riggle, both of Phoenix, AZ, his longtime companion, Polly Ramer and sisters, Helen (Loren) Stackhouse, Huffman Lake, and Linda (Everett) Maurer, Nappanee.


Friends may call Tuesday from 2-8 pm at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, where funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday. Burial will be in Union Center Cemetery with Military Graveside Services by the Nappanee American Legion.
