Life Legacy


Dorothy A. Tobias, age 79, of 252 W. Reed Street, Nappanee, died at 3:05 pm Friday, March 23, 2012 at her home. She was born on June 12, 1932 in Kosciusko County to Harvey and Fannie (Slabaugh) Farmwald. She married Jack Tobias on July 10, 1953 in Savannah, Georgia. He survives along with 5 children, Wanda (Myron) VanderWerf of Goshen, Audrey Tobias of Nappanee, Jackie (Mike) Kupke of Goshen, Natalie (Eric) Hochstetler of Ormond Beach, FL and Matthew (Evie) Tobias of Nappanee, 10 Grandchildren, Kristy Schill, Jenna Rubio, Hillary Nissley, Jack Kupke, Amber Hochstetler, Rebecca Hochstetler, Whitney Hochstetler, Asa Tobias, Samantha Tobias and Trey Tobias, 5 Great Grandchildren, a Sister, Mary Yoder of Nappanee, 2 Brothers, Oliver Farmwald of Nappanee and Andrew (Linda) Farmwald of Milford, 4 Step Sisters, Erma (Loren) Troyer of Nappanee, Mary Ellen (Joni) Beachy of Bremen, Eleanor (Jay) Peachey of Nappanee and Kay (Dale) Schwartz of Nappanee, 4 Step Brothers, Allen (Tressie) Slabaugh of Nappanee, Glenn (Enid) Slabaugh of Goshen, Larry (Katie) Slabaugh of Nappanee and Dale (Ina) Slabaugh of Nappanee. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Homer Yoder.

Dorothy had worked at Vitreous Steel in Nappanee, which is where she met her husband Jack. She also had been a seamstress at Holiday Rambler, Blue Bell, Relaxo and Newmar. She retired in 2011 after working at Fred’s Flowers for 17 years. She was a member of the First Brethren Church in Nappanee, where she was very active. She had been a Sunday School Teacher, a Youth Leader, an AWANA Leader, a Deaconess and a member of the WMS. At the beginning of this last school year she enjoyed being a mentor at Woodview Elementary School. She also enjoyed being a Mom and a Grandma.

Visitation will be Monday from 2-8 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home in Nappanee and one hour prior to services which will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Brethren Church in Nappanee. Rev. Tom Schiefer and Rev. Bart Shaw will officiate and burial will be in Union Center Cemetery.
