Biography

Elma R. Stickel, age 97, of Miller’s Merry Manor, Wakarusa, died at 5:40 am, Saturday, April 21, 2012. She was born October 11, 1914 in Wakarusa to Loyd and Magdalene Flory Weldy. She was married to Herb Stickel and he preceded in death in 1991.

Mrs. Stickel graduated from Wakarusa High School when she was 16. She attended Ball State University and Manchester College, each for 1 year. She went back to college and graduated in 1960 from Goshen College so she could keep her teacher’s license. She taught grades 1,2, and 3 in Wakarusa and Madison Township Schools for 41 years and has pictures of every class she taught. Elma tutored children during the summer at no cost.She was the oldest member of the Bible Baptist Church where she was the church historian. She had been a member of the Wakarusa Domestic Economics Club. She also enjoyed bowling and gardening.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Judy (Fred) Firks, Ft. Wayne and Janice (Larry) Butcher, Columbia City, grandchildren, Tom (Carol) Firks and Tim (Jena) Firks, both of Noblesville, and Jessica (Justin) Heffernan, Ft. Wayne, 6 great grandchildren, and a sister, Flora Bowser, Bremen. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and 5 brothers, Carl, Newell, Glade, Harold, and Lowell Weldy.

Family and friends may call from 2-8 on Wednesday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Wakarusa and for 1 hour prior to the 11:00 am Funeral Service on Thursday at the Bible Baptist Church.

Pastor Brooks Henry will officiate. Burial will be in Olive West Cemetery.
